But if you’re looking to take a dip in the ocean, you might want to consider the time of year. The ocean temperature can get chilly during certain months, making swimming less enjoyable. In this article, I’ll share with you the best and worst months for ocean swimming in Tenerife.

Tenerife Water Temperature and Climate

Tenerife is known for its varied climatic zones, with more than 12 in total.

Because of its subtropical climate, Tenerife is often referred to as the island of eternal spring and a continent in miniature.

The air temperature is almost constant throughout the year, with a difference of 5-6 degrees between the winter and summer seasons. The average temperature in Tenerife is +24C, with no rainy season and very strong winds.


The south of the island has a dry and warm climate, while the north is humid, with alternating cloudiness and an abundance of vegetation.

The island’s climate is considered the best in the world. The Canary Islands are also the only European resort where you can swim most months of the year, as the water temperature in Tenerife never drops below 19 degrees Celsius, thanks to the warm currents of the Gulf Stream.


Holidaymakers on the beaches of Europe’s Mediterranean and Adriatic seas are used to the fact that the warmest sea is from May to August. Tenerife is a different story, with a completely different climate.

In Tenerife, the water temperature in the Atlantic Ocean reaches a pleasant range of +23 to +26 degrees Celsius during the initial stages of autumn.

Contrary to popular belief, the best time to visit Tenerife is not during the summer season but in the months of September and October.

You’ll experience the warmest temperatures from late July to late November. During these months, you’ll feel comfortable in the water. The water temperature ranges from July to November between +22 to +26 degrees Celsius.

As December arrives, the ocean waters surrounding Tenerife start to gradually decrease in temperature. Despite this, December and the first part of January still offer enjoyable swimming conditions, with the temperature ranging from 21ºC to 22ºC.

From the second half of January to mid April, Tenerife has the coldest ocean water temperature of +18 + 19 degrees Celsius. The water temperature in Tenerife never falls below this level due to the warm ocean currents: the Gulf Stream and the North African Current.

From the second half of April the water begins to warm up again and in May it usually reaches + 20 degrees Celsius.

During the month of June, the water temperature can be quite pleasant, typically hovering around 21 degrees Celsius. Many people find June to be a good time for a beach vacation that involves taking a dip in the ocean.
